The question seems easy enough. Look closely at the t-shirt and tell us how many holes you see in it…
When you do, you’ll notice that the front of the shirt has two obvious holes in it. But is that all of the holes you see? Be honest now. Don’t guess and don’t let this trick question fool you.
There is a reason that so few people get this answer correct. They don’t spend enough time trying to figure out the real meaning behind the question.
The best way to approach it is to think closely about the words. How many holes are in this shirt?
When you break down the question to its most basic level, you’ll realize that there is more meaning in it than you might have given it credit for in the beginning.
For example, we take for granted that the t-shirt has an opening for the body, the arms, the head. But aren’t these holes as well?
For the 17 percent who get this correct, they realize that these openings count as holes too. And why wouldn’t they? They’re somewhere that lets something pass through the fabric.
Let’s break it down even more. You will find a hole in the shirt at the opening for the head and the two arms. That makes three holes so far.
Plus, you’ll have an opening at the bottom so you can put the shirt over your body. Right there you have four holes already. But now you have to deal with the two holes in the middle.
Since they go clean through the entire shirt, that means there is a hole on either side of the t-shirt. Because of that, each puncture in the shirt counts as two holes. One in the front and one in the back.
With the four openings and these four holes, you see a total of 8 holes in this t-shirt.
Be honest, how many did you think there were? If you don’t stop to think about it, you’re going to say 2. And that’s okay because most people think that. But were you one of the 17% to get the answer correct?
If you were right, then you are one of the few people to get it right.
